Summer of 2008 - Outward Bound Program
In June of 2008 the Cameron G. O’Connor Foundation announced the awarding of a full campership for Outward Bound to a deserving member of the Arlington Boys and Girls Club. Working with Executive Director Dan Brosnan and staff member Derek Curran member Andrew, 13 years of age, was selected as the recipient of this award.
Outward Bound is a non-profit organization that for more than 60 years has offered adventure based, educational summer programs for teens. Outward Bound’s Boston facility is located on Thompson Island in Boston Harbor and offers a variety of Youth Expeditions geared specifically by sex to age groups 12 -13 and 14 – 17.
Andrew selected the Boston Harbor Sailing and Climbing expedition which took place during the period of July 12th to July 23rd, 2008. The course description for this Expedition includes the following:
“On this 12-day course join 10 new friends and your instructors on a 30' pulling boat for an adventure in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area. You will explore islands throughout the harbor and sleep on your boat. Learn navigation and seamanship skills. Work together as a team. Challenge yourself as you climb the 62' Alpine Tower on Thompson Island. Students learn environmental stewardship from their experiences as well as interactions with National Park Rangers and participate in service projects.”
The Cameron G. O’Connor Foundation’s award covered application and tuition costs of $2,140.
Andrew thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience and returned with his newly acquired learning and adventure skills and an understanding of the importance of teamwork in all life’s adventures.
The Cameron G. O’Connor Foundation looks forward to working with the Arlington Boys and Girls Club to make this wonderful opportunity available to another Club Member in the summer of 2009.
